The Turakina River has public access via the beach at Koitiata Township. Due to a man made cut directing the river out to sea, a lagoon has formed in the old river bed. This is periodically washed out by sea water and is commonly used for swimming.
Due to the Lagoon being far easier to access than the river and it being popular with swimmers the contact recreation sample for bacteria is taken from the Lagoon.
This site is new to the contact recreation programme in 2015/2016 and therefore does not have enought data to generate an overall risk grade.
