Kaikokopu Stream has public access at it mouth at Himitangi Beach. It is a popular swimming spot especially for young children due to its shallow depth and low flows for much of the summer period. E. coli concentrations can breach contact recreation guidelines at times especially following rainfall and it is recommended to wait after rainfall events until the Stream is clear again before swimming.
Much of the upstream landscape is rural though the immediate area is taken up by the Himatangi Beach Township. Septic tanks and the camping grounds do have the potential to influence water quality at this site.
