Manawatu-Wanganui region

Coastal

Our Region stretches across both eastern and western coastlines.  Most of the western coastline is publically accessible and extensively utilised.  The Manawatu Estuary at Foxton is home to godwits over the summer months and is a popular location for bird watchers.

Coastal water quality at seven of the Region's most popular coastal swimming sites has been monitored by the Council since the summer of 2004.

The programme is a joint project between Horizons Regional Council, local District Health Boards and the District Councils. Water samples are collected once a week between 1 November and 30 April from these sites and analysed for faecal indicator bacteria. Both Enterococci and Faecal coliforms are measured at all of the coastal bathing sites.

At the end of the sampling week, each site is given a grading based on its suitability for swimming. At the end of the sampling season each site is given an overall grading based on the number of samples that were considered ‘suitable' or ‘unsuitable' during the season. This provides the public with an indication of how suitable a site is for swimming outside of the monitoring period.
