Hawke's Bay region

Surface Water Zone: Tukituki

The Tukituki catchment is one of the larger catchments in Hawke’s Bay covering approximately 2500 km². The Tukituki River flows from central Hawke’s Bay 80 km into the Pacific Ocean near Haumoana (10 km south of Napier).

The Tukituki River receives much of its runoff from the Ruahine Range, where the hard greywacke has a low capacity for water infiltration. The Ruataniwha Plain lies at the foot of the ranges, representing a basin filled with material derived from the rapidly eroding Ruahine Range. The largest tributary of the Tukituki is the Waipawa, draining the Ruahine Range. In the south the Tukipo and Makaretu Rivers join the Tukituki after flowing across the Ruataniwha Plains.

The hill country east of the Ruataniwha Plains is comprised of soft sedimentary rock (mudstone, sandstone and limestone), producing rapid runoff from steep slopes to the Mangatarata, Mangamahaki and Papanui Streams. The Tukituki River crosses the Heretaunga Plain before reaching Hawke Bay at the small coastal settlement of Haumoana. The headwaters in the Ruahine Range include native forest, shrub and tussock. Intensive dairy farming, viticulture, horticulture, and cropping is more common on the Ruataniwha Plains.

The rest of the catchment is predominantly hill country sheep and beef farming, with some areas of exotic forestry. Landuse on the lower Heretaunga Plains includes small farm blocks, orchards and vineyards. A dam and irrigation scheme is proposed as part of a wider programme to better manage water resources and quality in the Tukituki catchment and as a long-term sustainable water supply solution for Central Hawke’s Bay.

Regional councils collect information about how much water is available and manage resource consents for those wishing to take water from rivers and streams. Use the buttons below to view information on: how much water is available, where it comes from and how its used.

The table above shows the average amount of rainfall the water management zone receives each year and how much of that flows out to sea. These are approximate figures only.

The table above shows the amount of water that is available for use compared to the amount that has been consented. The ‘Total Consented’ and ‘Total Consented and Measured’ fields are based on percentages of the ‘Total available to Consent’ field. If this field is not populated no data will be displayed. Some consents require actual use to be monitored and this is presented as 'Total measured volume Used' where available.

The above table shows the proportion of water consented for irrigation, industrial, stock, town supply and other. It excludes hydro electricity. In this region/management zone {{hydroUsage.totalVolume}} m3/year is consented for hydro-electricity and makes up {{hydroUsage.percentageConsented}}% of the total water volume consented for this region/management zone
