Groundwater Zone: Tukituki

There are three main aquifers in the Tukituki catchment, the most productive being the aquifer beneath the Ruataniwha and the Takapau plains.

The most productive aquifers are formed at the upper end of the catchment within the more permeable sediments beneath the Ruataniwha Plain, and at the lower end of the catchment, where the Tukituki aquifer overlaps and merges with the main aquifer system of the Heretaunga Plain.

Smaller productive groundwater resources are found east of the Ruataniwha Plains along alluvial river deposits of the Waipawa and Tukituki Rivers and, north of these rivers, along the Papanui Stream near Otane.

Secondary aquifer systems, which are typically lower yielding, can be found within limestone formations south of Lake Poukawa, along the northern boundary of the Papanui Catchment, and potentially along the edge of the Ruataniwha Plains where limestone emerges nearer the surface.

Groundwater resources in the Tukituki Catchment are divided into three allocation zones for managing the volume of groundwater allocated from each groundwater resource. The Ruataniwha Plain represents two of these allocation zones and the Papanui Catchment represents the third.

Regional Councils are working with the Ministry for the Environment on the best way to calculate this figure. We will include these figures on LAWA when they become available.
