Recreational water quality update- Central swim sites

The severe weather from Cyclone Gabrielle resulted in a wide range of impacts that will persist for some time.

In the Napier area, the Awatoto wastewater treatment plant is still discharging untreated sewerage into the marine environment. 

Wastewater screening is now operational, but NCC are indicating resuming wastewater treatment could be many months away. See the NCC website for more information

Eating shellfish still poses a health risk until wastewater treatment is fully resumed. Shellfish such as mussels, oysters, cockles and pipis are all filter feeders meaning they constantly filter the surrounding seawater.

Additionally, rivers have had access impacted and still contain high loads of sediment and debris.
