Puhokio Stream at Beach reserve

The Puhokio Stream at the popular beach of Waimarama, passes through the settlement and discharges into the estuary created by the April 2011 storm. The catchment is relatively small and steep, and predominantly agricultural and pastoral.

This stream is monitored fortnightly as historical water quality sampling has indicated it can have poor water quality. Generally speaking, there is a high risk of this stream not being suitable for swimming on any given day.

The Puhokio Stream at Waimarama passes through the settlement and discharges into the estuary created by the April 2011 flood. The catchment is relatively small and steep, and predominantly agricultural and pastoral.

In the past, the stream has repeatedly shown high levels of faecal contamination, sourced from both agriculture and on-site wastewater treatment system malfunction.

Elevated levels of bacteria are generally found during all conditions.
