In this catchment HBRC monitors the Kopuawhara stream and the Nuhaka River (also for recreational water quality). The catchment area is 68 km² and lies in soft sedimentary geology, influenced by a warm and wet climate. The Kopuawhara Stream drains north of the land bridge to the Mahia peninsula, whereas the Nuhaka River is at the turnoff on the main road to the peninsula. Mahia Peninsula is an attractive recreational area; especially the beaches are a popular attraction.
