Ahuriri Catchment

The Taipo Stream runs through Taradale, a suburb of Napier, to an outlet in the Ahuriri Estuary. It is a remnant of the much larger estuary that existed before the uplift caused by the 1931 Hawke's Bay Earthquake.

The Taipo has been heavily modified in the past to carry stormwater through urban and semi-urban areas of Taradale and Park Island.  The sampling site is shown in the photo.

It is included in the TANK Plan  - standing for the Tutaekuri, Ahuriri, Ngaruroro and Karamu catchments on the wider Heretaunga Plains - which is well underway in looking at new policies for managing land and water.

Further downstream, a redesign of the stream near the sportsground has now given it a more natural meander and incorporates wetland and park plantings.  Cycle trails, pathways, housing and reserves border the stream.
