Situated on the southern side of the estuary, downstream from the township, the Wairoa Estuary site is the downstream receiving environment for the Wairoa River catchment. This site has highly variable sediment characteristics between years, and is characterised by the nereid polychaete Nicon aestuarensis, and estuarine snail Halopyrgus estuarine. This site has been monitored annually since 2011.
