Hawke's Bay region

The very shape of Hawke's Bay is defined by our coastline, the curve of Hawke Bay within Mahia Peninsula and Cape Kidnappers and the long sweeping Pacific coastline.   Hawke's Bay has a diverse coastline of sand, gravel, rock and cliffs, plus estuaries, harbours, river mouths and a marine reserve.

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council samples 37 popular freshwater, lagoon, and coastal swimming sites each week during summer from early November to the end of March.  Hawke's Bay's wide variety of beaches – sand, gravel and rock with their surf breaks, river openings or calmer waters - are important to local people for their environmental values, kai moana, recreation and sport.  HBRC asked the public about their favourite swimming spots to help determine the selection of the most popular recreational beaches and rivers for water quality monitoring.
