The Waimate Creek catchment arises in the Hunter Hills and flows towards Wainono Lagoon. Waimate Creek itself is largely an ephemeral stream, with spring-fed tributaries such as Sir Charles Creek in the lower reaches. Spring-fed streams arise on low-lying farmland in the Waimate district and flow into Wainono Lagoon Dead Arm, before discharging to the coast via a permanent box structure at the mouth of the Waihao River and the Wainono Dead Arm/Waimate Creek. The Waihao Box extends from the mouth of Waihao River out to the coast, preventing the shingle barrier from closing the river mouth, and facilitates drainage of flood waters from the Waihao River, Waimate Creek and Wainono Lagoon. The catchment is predominantly pastoral with small wetlands and riparian vegetation. The creek provides habitat for native fish and birds and contributes to the coastal ecosystem.
