The Clarence River/Waiau Toa catchment is in North Canterbury, bordering the Kaikoura and Marlborough Districts. It is an alpine-sourced braided river that flows through the St James Conservation Area and Molesworth Station, before continuing south-east from the Seaward and Inland KaikÅura Ranges to the Pacific Ocean. The upper catchment is a combination of conservation land and high-country farming, while the lower valley supports pastoral farming. The river is valued for its remote scenery, recreation, and habitats for native fish and birds.
