Can I swim here?

Bay of Plenty Regional Council undertakes water quality testing at popular Bay of Plenty swimming spots every summer, to check how safe each spot is for swimming.

The council regularly takes samples between November and March, monitoring more than 50 river and stream, lake, beach and estuary sites. These sites are monitored for faecal contamination (bacterial monitoring) from October to March each year.

Maintaining and/or improving water quality is one of the regional council’s outcomes. To help with monitoring recreational water quality council has appointed a dedicated recreational bathing assistant to support the environmental science team over the 2016/17 summer.

In 2015 it also established a Water Programme of Action, which details activities and projects focused on managing the Bay of Plenty’s freshwater resources.
