This muddy site is in the upper reaches of the Hellyers Creek arm at the confluence of the Kaipātiki Creek. The site is fringed by mangroves and has been monitored since 2005.
Hellyers Upper is monitored every few years for mud content, metal concentrations and macrofauna. The site has had consistently elevated levels of the heavy metals copper and zinc, and has marginal ecological health.
