This site is located in the Wairau Creek, a small tributary extending towards the southwest from the main Whau Estuary channel. Elevated levels of copper, lead and zinc have been recorded at Whau Wairau since monitoring began in 1998. Today, the site is sampled every few years for macrofauna, mud content and metal contamination.
