This site is located in the lower reaches of the Whau Estuary, a 5km long tidal creek on the southern shore of the Central Waitematā Harbour. Whau Lower was first sampled in 1998 and has consistently had elevated levels of metals (most commonly zinc). Today, the site is sampled every few years for macrofauna, mud content and metal contamination.
