This site is located on a fairly uniform mudflat in the upper reaches of the estuary, approximately 150m upstream of the Southern Motorway. Middlemore is muddy, with mature mangroves fringing the site. Middlemore is currently sampled every few years for macrofauna, mud content and metals.
Monitoring began here in 1998, and the site has consistently had high metal concentrations, most commonly zinc.
