The Karaka Point site is in the eastern Manukau Harbour on the Hikihiki Bank sandflat. It is downstream of the major Pahurehure Inlet and is part of a network of sites that were introduced to document harbour-wide changes in sandflat ecology.
Monitoring has taken place since 1987 and the site is sampled on a rotational basis for mud content and macrofauna, among other sediment characteristics. Mud content has been consistently low and the site is in good health.
