The Auckland Airport site is in the eastern Manukau Harbour on a sandflat adjacent to Wiroa Island. It is downstream of the Pukaki Creek inlet and is part of a network of sites that were introduced to document harbour-wide changes in sandflat ecology.
This site has been monitored since 1987 and is sampled several times each year for mud content and macrofauna, among other sediment characteristics. Although close to the country’s largest international airport, this sandy site has a high diversity of macrofauna and is in very good health.
