This site is on an intertidal sandflat with patches of mud and scattered pebbles and large stones. It has been monitored since 1995 to detect any impacts from changes to land use in the catchments surrounding Mahurangi Harbour.
Mud content and macrofauna are monitored every three months, and heavy metal contaminants roughly every ten years. The site is in a relatively high-flow area close to the estuary mouth, and as a result mud content and contaminant concentrations are generally low.
