There is currently a Red alert toxic algae status in place for Hutt River at Silverstream Bridge. There are high levels of toxic algae and large amounts of detached mats.
We strongly advise NO SWIMMING and KEEPING DOGS AWAY from these locations. Detached mats represent a high risk to dogs as they love the smell and may try to eat it. If you are walking in the area we advise keeping your dog on a lead and ensure it does not scavenge any debris from the rivers edge.
Toxic algae represents a very real risk to human and animal health. If you think your dog has swallowed toxic algae, take it to the nearest vet IMMEDIATELY.
