There is currently a Red alert toxic algae status in place for the Hutt River at Maoribank corner all the way down to Taita Rock. There are high levels of toxic algae and/or large amounts of detached mats at these locations.
We strongly advise NO SWIMMING and KEEPING DOGS AWAY from these locations. Detached mats represent a high risk to dogs as they love the smell and may try to eat it. If you are walking in the area we advise keeping your dog on a lead and ensure it does not scavenge any debris from the rivers edge.
Toxic algae represents a very real risk to human and animal health. If you think your dog has swallowed toxic algae, take it to the nearest vet IMMEDIATELY.
