Ngarara Stream

The Ngarara Stream is located on the Kāpiti Coast, just north of Paraparaumu. The stream flows in a westerly direction through parts of the Waikanae township before it joins with the Waimeha stream mouth.

The stream is located within the Nga Manu wetland complex; a Key Native Ecosystem managed by Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC). It is home to several species of native freshwater fish including the longfin eel, shortfin eel, redfin bully, banded kōkopu, giant kōkopu, brown mudfish and inanga.

GWRC carried out environmental monitoring in the lower reaches of the stream until July 2016. Recreational water quality is not assessed in this stream.

The predominant landuse of the Ngarara Stream catchment is pastoral and urban land. Therefore, Environmental health and water quality in the Ngarara Stream can be affected by urban and rural run-off, as well as low flows during summer months.
