The Kaiwhata River is located in the eastern Wairarapa and flows in a southeasterly direction before discharging into the sea just south of Riversdale Beach.
Greater Wellington Regional Council monitor the environmental health at one location in the middle reaches of the Totara Stream; a tributary of the Kaiwhata River. Recreational water quality monitoring is not carried out in the river.
The Kaiwhata River drains a catchment that is dominated by exotic forest in the upper reaches of the river, and pastoral land in the lower reaches.
