Catlins at Houipapa

Lower catchment site with high ecological and scenic values. Provides significant habitat for fish spawning and juvenile fish.

Sheep and beef grazing represents the majority of recorded land use in the catchment, with deer and forestry being less common.

Water quality is good.

The Catlins River originates in native forest and has excellent water quality. The site is rural and scenic.

Supports a range of indigenous fish and invertebrates, including some rare fish – provides significant habitat for roundhead galaxiid and giant and banded kokopu. Significant presence of trout.

Farming in the area has traditionally been sheep and beef grazing; however, land use is changing and more intensive farming is now prevalent in the Owaka catchment and is likely to expand.

Samples are collected monthly at this site. Proposed national guidelines suggest monthly sampling is required for trend analysis. Therefore, any trends shown here are based on best practice in terms of sampling frequency.

This data is not flow adjusted. National guidelines suggest that flow-sensitive variables are flow 'adjusted' before trend analysis. Therefore, any trends shown here may be affected by variations in flow across sampling occasions.

What do the icons mean?

It is important to note that changes to the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management 2014 were announced in August 2017. The changes have removed the below set of criteria for E. coli, and any reference to this use of water (i.e. occasional immersion). The new criteria, effective from 6 September 2017, are for the use of water for swimming and other full contact, sustained exposure activities (diving, surfing etc). The data on LAWA has not yet been updated to reflect the new requirements.

C
Water quality is considered suitable for the designated use. People are exposed to a moderate risk of infection (less than 5% risk) from contact with water during activities with occasional immersion (such as wading and boating).

Water quality is not considered suitable for the designated use. People are exposed to a high risk of infection (greater than 5% risk) from contact with water during activities with occasional immersion (such as wading and boating).
