Last updated 8 Dec 2020 Cyanobacteria mats are now at moderate levels between 20-30% cover in areas of the lower Maitai river. The cyanobacteria hotspots include the Maitai camp, Dennes Hole and Avon Terrace.
As a precautionary approach dog owners should not allow their dogs to swim in any areas of the Maitai, or drink from the river, where cyanobacteria is present until advised otherwise.
Nelson City Council will have signage to this effect at the main swimming holes.
Visit Nelson City Council's website for the latest monitoring results and for more information on cyanobacteria.
