Mangahao River at Marima Domain

This swimming and recreational spot is about 12kms south of Pahiatua and is a recreational reserve operated by Tararua District Council.  The area has a picnic and BBQ area and is popular for swimming and fishing. Toilets are also available.

Users should look out for the presence of cyanobacteria/blue green algae (shiny, smooth black or dark green algae that coats stones on the river bed) during low flows as this can be potentially toxic to dogs and humans if consumed. Two dams forming part of the Mangahoa Power Scheme are located in the headwaters and the site has signs posted warning campers thatwater levels can rise quickly if water is spilled from the dams in very wet weather.

This beach grading is an interim grading based on two years (50 data points) of monitoring at this swimming spot site.  There is a strong relationship between recent rain and elevated E. coli concentrations.  This means swimmer health-risk can be reliably predicted.  There are no known point source discharges directly affecting the site.  The land use in the catchment above this swimming spot is predominantly sheep and beef farming. There is stock access to waterways in the catchment.
