Advisory Note: Caution – Cyanobacteria present

Advisory Note: Caution – Cyanobacteria mats (toxic algae) are present in a number of Canterbury rivers.

The following advice is for dog owners. Information on the Can I Swim Here page (including health warnings) is for human health.

We are aware that benthic cyanobacteria mats (toxic algae) have been observed at the following location which is unmonitored and not located on LAWA's Can I Swim Here page (not monitored for human health)

  • Conway River at Inland Road

The above site is in addition to the sites already with a public health warning.

We urge all dog owners to be cautious if taking their dogs to a river and to check the river prior to letting dogs off the lead.   It only takes a small amount of cyanobacteria (toxic algae) to potentially harm your dog. If your dog becomes unwell after contact with the water, please take them to the vet immediately.

We advise the public to be vigilant around these rivers and avoid contact with water if black mats are present. If you become unwell after contact with water from any sites listed, please seek medical advice.
