The Opihi River at Waipopo Huts is a hill-fed river near the coast in South Canterbury
This braided river site is popular for swimming and fishing, however potentially toxic algal warnings have been issued to this site in the past.
Recreational water quality at this site is influenced by flow related spikes in E. coli. Swimming is not recommended at the site for upto 48hrs following rainfall During the summer months, potentially toxic cyanobacteria mats may pose a public health risk at this site.
