This site is located in the upper reaches of the Whau Estuary, a 5km long tidal creek on the southern shore of the Central Waitematā Harbour. The surrounding intertidal banks are fringed with mangroves and the land use adjacent to the site is residential, but commercial and industrial areas occur further up the catchment.
Whau Upper was first monitored in 1998 and has consistently been found to have high levels of metal contamination, however levels of lead are decreasing. This site is currently monitored every few years for macrofauna, mud content and metal contamination.
