Purewa is located on a mudflat in the mid-to-upper reaches of the Pourewa Estuary, a tributary running southeast from Hobson Bay. The catchment surrounding this site is largely residential with some areas of regenerating vegetation, and the site is fringed by mature mangroves.
First monitored in 2002, the site is currently sampled every few years for macrofauna, mud content and metal contamination. Purewa has consistently had elevated levels of the heavy metal zinc.
